The Bus Saga Begins!

Bus’in - It!

ON THE

ROAD

And The Road Saga Begins!

Sherill and Dorothy East - In the Gospel Ship!

Yes, you have just met the REAL DEAL… Back when it was NOT popular to be on the road because life in America was all about -- keeping up with the Joneses’ -- the 8 to 5 dead end job, the white picket fence, the huge mortgage and eventually -- NO TIME FOR YOUR LIFE!!

When I met Sherill and Dorothy East they were -- Larger Than Life!... As evidenced by the picture you see but it was much, much more!

Back in the year 1974, I stumbled onto Cardiff Reef as a newbie Surfer from Florida with only one thing in mind…

Surf Hard, Surf Long, Surf Everyday!

The problem was, I had to work everyday from 3-11pm as an ICU Nurse in order to pay the huge rents here in California, the gas and electricity and the rest of the seemingly endless necessities!

Exhausted from surfing then to the hospital for 10 hours of grueling work, I was punished… When all I wanted to do was just surf!

Rounding the corner into the Cardiff Beach parking lot at the end of the culdesak -- I saw the oddest sight. It was the - GOSPEL SHIP!

Invited into their bus for an evening of thrilling tales on the road, surfing every day, life in a bus and a delicious dinner of Corn and Baked Potatoes -- They had befriended a total stranger!

I was stunned at their kindness…

And in telling them both of my tales of woe, the hardships of working as an ICU Nurse to pay the bills when my ‘Bliss’ was to just SURF… They said the magical words!

In Unison They Said...

“Toss the landlord the keys, get on the road, surf everyday

and hang with us - it will be fun!”

“Why are you paying all this money out when all you need is a place to sleep” Go get yourself a car big enough to sleep in and start creating your dreams!”

Shear Genius...

-- The Fun Was On! --

Here is the Gospel Ship and My 1950 Cadillac!

Yes, it was a 1950 dark green Cadillac. I tore out the front seat then went to a wrecking yard to get a bucket seat to drive in.

I then tore out the back seat and my girlfriend gave me a down feather mattress cause she said she felt sorry for me living in a car!... Wow what a wonderful gift as I stretched from front to the back and slept like a baby on the passenger side of the Caddy!

A couple of days later I tossed the apartment keys to my TYRANT bi-polar of a roommate and told him to pay all the rent - “I’M OUT!”…

It was a cold blustery day and raining a light mist as I left the apartment. I parked the car at Ponto State Beach - Now Rent Free… Took out my lawn chair, put on a warm thick coat and sat under an umbrella to watch the evening sunset -- Then it hit me like a freight train!

NO ONE OWNED ME ANY MORE!

* Not the landlord.

* Not the gas and electric company.

* Not the phone company.

* Not anyone with their hand out.

* Freedom was but a gallon of gas away...

Yes, I was now FREE to surf everyday to all the waves I would have missed, to work just ONE DAY A WEEK as a Nurse -- to more than make ends meet!

But more importantly, I had met the - 2 most important people in my life -- who I followed on the road for the next 20 years!

That one day I met Sherill and Dorothy eventually led me to building my first bus, my second bus, my third bus and now my fourth bus….

It led me to the love of my life -- Barbara -- A 10 year honeymoon

on the beach and to our - 3 incredible children.

More to come.
